 Israel Carmy's
family came from Germany.
Early in the War the British requested German-speaking volunteers, and the Haganah assigned him to a special unit
created to infiltrate Rommel's Afrika Corps.
Later Carmy joined the
Brigade, fought in Italy, and led the vengeance squad after the war. General Shlomo Shamir relied on Carmy and Meir
Zorea to manage the mounting logistical challenges of illegally transferring Holocaust
survivors to Jewish DP camps and onto ships to Palestine.
Israel Carmy lives near
Haifa.
