1994 marked the fiftieth
reunion of the Jewish Brigade--and the beginning of IN OUR OWN HANDS. Our
crew traveled to
Israel to meet the veterans and film the gathering.
In follow-up
interviews
with a dozen senior
Brigade officers we collected compelling first-hand
accounts of
the Brigade in action--more than thirty hours in all. Throughout 1995 and 1996 we conducted more interviews with
veterans,
and also spoke with survivors who
had been rescued by the Brigade.
As with Steven
Spielberg's
effort to record the
testimony of Holocaust victims, time has not always been on our side. For example,
General
Meir Zorea, a
Brigade leader and hero in the War of Independence, died only months after we
spoke with
him. Since then Netanel Lorch has also died.
